This work is based on Szózat by Béni Egressy and the Hungarian national anthem by Ferenc Erkel. Liszt originally wrote it for orchestra (S. 353; LW G34; R. 448) and made arrangements for solo piano (S. 486; LW A261; R. 158) and piano duet (S. 628b).
