Pianolibrary.org is an online catalogue containing musical incipits and related information for more than 5000 pieces for solo piano. The statistics page gives a simple overview of these contents. For any questions or feedback, please send me a message.

Will more pieces be added to the database?
Even with many pieces currently included, much of the important piano repertoire is still to be added. This is a long-term project, but I intend, as often as I can, to continue expanding the website. New entries will be listed on the home page.

How can I report a mistake?
It is inevitable that some errors will remain. If you find any, no matter how small, please send me a message.

How are difficulties and durations determined?
The difficulty scale ranks pieces in half-points from 1 to 5. This scale is naturally subjective and intended purely as a rough guide. More information is provided on the difficulty scale page. The durations given are estimates under a typical tempo, assuming, unless stated otherwise, all repeated passages are observed.

How are the recommended editions chosen?
In general, the chosen editions are urtext-like editions that are faithful to a composer’s intentions. As a consequence, even if they are genuinely useful for different reasons, instructional editions, such as Alfred Cortot’s Chopin editions and Artur Schnabel’s editions of the Beethoven sonatas, are not listed. Further, typically only editions that are currently or recently in print are considered. Older editions, whether first editions such as those by Durand of Ravel’s music, or collected editions such as the nineteenth-century Breitkopf & Härtel Alte Mozart-Ausgabe of Mozart’s music, or Soviet-era editions of Prokofiev’s music, are therefore also not listed. These are often in the public domain and can be accessed anyway through the IMSLP links on each page, and, if not, are usually available as re-prints from certain publishers.

How is the website funded?
The website is free to use and contains no advertising. I have no wish for this to change. I work on the database in my spare time and pay all hosting and registration fees myself.

Does the website use any cookies?
The website is intended to be as simple as possible to use. The only cookies are the most basic, anonymised Google Analytics cookies, which provide data to me about, for instance, which composers and pieces are viewed most often. This, along with your feedback, helps me make future additions and improvements. Google has a page with information on the Google Analytics privacy principles, and a browser add-on for anyone who wishes to opt out of Google Analytics.

May I reproduce content from the website?
Within reason, you are welcome to reproduce small extracts from the website, such as musical incipits and lists of difficulties, for educational, non-commercial purposes. If you do so, I would be grateful for a reference back to pianolibrary.org so that others might also find and use the website. Please send me a message if you have any questions.
